Hi Psi20,
Welcome to our EV-STORE PHEV discussion. I know this company, and especially the manufacturer of the PHEV systems, based on a 3 to 5kW converter.
We were an official reseller of Enginer LLC. who stopped business in 2011. We begin Enginer like PHEV systems on 2008 as an association : Bientôt Electrique. After few tests, we encountered a lot of problems with the batteries : this kits didn't had any BMS and security rules. We finally built our own kits with Thundersky LFP40AHA batteries with a custom BMS solution and charger. Then, after few months, and about 10 PHEV cars, we met converter overheating cases, which ends by faulty kits.
At the end of 2011, Enginer wasn't able to replace the damaged converters. We decided to stop these kits. They seems cheap, but finally cost a lot of money to get them reliable.
I would recommend to forget this solution, it will be at least a lost of time, and at worst a lost of money. But it could be a good introduction at a low cost if you want to enter in the extraordinary world of the PHEV cars. In this case, you have to know the kit cost + car must be a good deal : keep in mind that you buy a faulty kit which will require some work in the future.
Edit : by the way, i visited Shanghai Fountainhead Electronic during a business travel, and i quickly understood the problems with the converters. This company only build converters for China market, mainly low cost solutions. Also, it is difficult to export good quality products for that kind of companies, we don't have the same standards and requirements here & there. They can build any custom converter at a low cost, but the quality/price aren't matched. Finally, it's important to insist in the fact that the converters don't communique with the car through Canbus. In case of any problem with the Battery ECU (too high or low battery temp, SOC, discharge/charge current limits), the converter can't switch on/off itself and usually, the result is a DTC error set by the Battery ECU, and a low battery power.
